Armidale Chess Club

Sporting Body entry
University of New England and Regional Archives, Heritage Centre

[Repository details]
Reference:A0458
Date Range:1972 - 1975
Description:

Newspaper cuttings of a weekly chess column, published in the Armidale Express from July 1972 to May 1975 under the pseudonym 'Zugzwang'. The column covered local, Australian and international chess news and usually featured an annotated game. Coverage of the Armidale Chess Club championship tournaments for 1972, 1973 and 1974 provided interested readers with information of local significance. Included among the papers is a card index to the published games, together with 'copy' and related correspondence. The pen-name "Zugzwang" disguised (rather thinly) the identity of Allan Wilkes, who won the Armidale chess championship on a number of occasions between 1964 and 1982.
