Collection Title: | Wongwibinda Collection - Wright Family |
Reference: | A0115 |
Date Range: | 1867 - 1920 |
Description: | The records include diaries of Albert A. Wright (for 1867-1890); diaries of his wife Charlotte May Wright (for 1891-1892 and 1895); and diaries of his son Arthur F. Wright (for 1895 to 1912, excepting 1896, 1901-1902 and 1907-1908). A letterbook contains press-copies of C.M. Wright's business correspondence (1891-1894). There are some station accounts for the years 1902-1920, some drafts of indentures, mortgages etc. (1891, 1901) and some correspondence and receipts re land at 'Yandooya' (a property in the Warwick district of Queensland). Albert Andrew Wright (b. 27 May 1840, ob. 14 July 1890), pioneer pastoralist, managed 'Collymongool' station near Collarenebri for Mr. John Eales from March 1867 to May 1868. In July 1868, Wright took over the running of 'Nulalbin' (a property on the Dawson River, Queensland) for Eales, from whom he later purchased the station. In September 1872, Albert Wright married Charlotte May Mackenzie (1855-1929). After persevering for some years, most of them drought-stricken, in cattle raising on 'Nulalbin', Wright, together with his wife and young family, removed to 'Wongwibinda' (formerly 'Kangaroo Hills') near Armidale on the New England Tablelands of New South Wales. He died in Rockhampton in 1890, on his way back from a trip to the Gulf country, just as his New England venture was beginning to prosper. |
