In the New England region, separatist agitation which began in the 1840s was sustained into the following century with the formation of the New State Movement. It formally aligned itself with the United Country Party in the 1930s. Royal Commissions set up in the 1920s and 1930s investigated these claims for autonomy but no new States were recommended.
