New Opportunities for Women (1965 - 1970)

Archival Resources

New Opportunities for Women (N.O.W.) group was formed as a result of a Workers’ Education Association (WEA) weekend school for women. The inaugural meeting was held on 11 August 1965 at the WEA Institute in Corrimal Street Wollongong. The group was concerned with all matters relating to women. Special emphasis was given to the alleviation of the female unemployment problems in Wollongong including the provision of child-care facilities. An employment agency was established specifically for women however, due to increasing difficulty of providing sufficient voluntary personnel to staff the agency, it was closed on 11 December 1969.
The N.O.W.group itself ceased to exist soon afterwards. The final meeting was held on 9 March 1970.
