Description:

Photographs. Seventeen photographic prints showing buildings and streets in the Rocks, Sydney. Subjects include: Cumberland Street from Dawes Point, the Argyle cut and steps to Princes Street, the Whalers' Arms, Cambridge Street, Essex Street looking west from George Street, Argyle Street near Ives' Bond Store, the Model Public School at the intersection of Princes and Essex streets, Sydney Hospital, Ophthalmic Branch (Moorcliffe House), Holy Trinity Church, McBride's Hotel, Windmill street, etc. Five of the photographs are unidentified. The photographs were taken by Sir Elliot Johnson (1862-19--) scenic artist, telegraphist, seaman (2nd mate), journalist and jack-of-all-trades. Born in Newcastle-on-Tyne, Johnson travelled extensively, even seeing active service in the Chile-Peruvian war. He ultimately settled in Sydney, whence he entered the Australian Federal Parliament as the representative for Lang in 1903.
