Description: | Photostatic copies of the private and public correspondences as well as the business papers of the Duke of Newcastle between 1849 and 1865. Most of this material relates to the colonization of Australia and New Zealand by Great Britain. Among this material is included (i) the memo appointing the Duke of Newcastle as Secretary of State for the Colonies, 1854, (ii) private letter books containing most of the correspondences between the Duke of Newcastle and the Colonial Governors, 1852 to 1855 and 1859 to 1864, (iii) letters written from the Colonel Governors and other governmental employees to the Duke of Newcastle between 1852 and 1855 and 1858 to 1863 and (iv) miscellaneous papers relating to the topics of land grants, transportation of prisoners and progress reports for the continent of Australia, 1859 to 1863. An assortment of papers belonging to Sir John Young, the Colonial Governor of New South Wales during this period, are included in this collection. This material, dating between 1849 and 1865, is made up of the letters written by Young to various other officials of the colonial system. There is also a copy of an act to authorize payment of retiring pensions to Colonial Governors among this material. |
