Dr Alex Burnard was born in 1900. After studying both in Adelaide and London, Burnard received his Doctorate of Music in 1932. After teaching music at the University of Adelaide and at the NSW State Conservatorium of Music he retired in 1967. In 1970 he was awarded the MBE for services to Music and he died in 1971. |

Dr Alex Burnard was born on the 10th of October, 1900. After an early career as bank officer in Adelaide he decided to dedicate himself to music. He received a Bachelor of Music from the University of Adelaide in 1927 and by 1929 he was studying Composition and Pianoforte at London's Royal College of Music under Dr Ralph Williams and Mr Herbert Fryer respectively. Back in Adelaide, Burnard attained his Doctorate of Music in 1932. After a brief stint as a private music teacher and Chief Music Critic for the Adelaide Advertiser, Burnard accepted the post as a teacher of Composition and Orchestration in 1933. In 1935 he was offered a place at the NSW Conservatorium of Music in Sydney where he worked until his retirement in 1967. In 1953 Burnard was awarded the Coronation medal for his service to music and was again decorated in 1970 when on the first of January he received the MBE for his services to music, literature and education. Dr Alex Burnard died on the 4th of October, 1971. |
