The Hungerford family dynasty began with the arrival of Captain Emanuel Hungerford and his wife Catherine to Australia in 1828. Beginning with a parcel of land he bought on the Hunter River, and a land grant, he went on to found, with his sons, the station known as Baerami. Emanuel Hungerford went on to represent the Upper Hunter District in the Legislative Assembly. The Bank of New South Wales took over Baerami Station after the Depression of the early 1890s, then sold it in 1905.
