Born: 1 February 1785 County Cork, Ireland. Died: 8 August 1872 Maitland, New South Wales, Australia. |
Captain Hungerford was a lieutenant in the 32nd Foot Regiment and Captain of the South Cork Militia but retired because of ill health. Member of a former illustrious family whose power in England was at its peak in the Middle Ages, Emanuel emigrated from the family seat in County Cork, Ireland in 1828 with his entire family, including servants and schoolmaster. They arrived in Sydney on 19 May aboard the Alexander Henry. He was the patriarch of the Australian Hungerford dynasty. He bought 1920 acres at Wallis Plains in the Hunter River and in 1833 was granted approximately 2500 acres on Baerami Creek. Married to Catherine Loane, granddaughter of Sir Edwin Moore, they had four more children after arrival in Australia. He was appointed a magistrate from 1829 and a steward at Maitland races from 1833. He subscribed to many charities and served on many public committees. He lived on his property at Wallis Plains until his death. [Brief Biography compiled by Robin Hammond, January/February 2004] | |
