Born: 1839  Inverness, Scotland.  Died: 1914  Brisbane, Queensland.

John Mackay arrived in Sydney with his parents in 1854, and settled with them in New England. Some experience and skill as a surveyor meant he was appointed to lead an inland expedition in search of grazing land in 1860. His party 'discovered' land around the Isaacs River which would become known as the Mackay District.
