Newling, Cecil Bede (1883 - 1975)

Born: 12 July 1883  Pyrmont, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.  Died: 8 November 1975  Normanhurst, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.
Newling was educated at public schools in Sydney and then was appointed a pupil-teacher in February 1899. He enrolled at Fort Street Training School in 1904 and thereafter embarked upon a career in teaching. He married Violet 'Lassie' Molineux on 18 December 1912 and thereafter taught at schools in Moree and Tamworth and at Fort Street Boys' High, was headmaster at Cootamundra in 1923 and subsequently inspector at Broken Hill and Yass-Canberra.

Newling twice graduated with first class honours in History from the University of Sydney he obtained a BA with university medal in 1923 and an MA in 1925.

He was appointed foundation principal of Armidale Teachers' College on 1 February 1928. With a strong personality and a sense of justice and moral purpose, he inspired admiration, affection and even fear. He was progressive and enlightened in the matter of educational theory and practice and had traditional social and moral attitudes. He encouraged close links between the college and the city. During World War II he was the secret custodian of valuable material and artworks from the Mitchell Library and the National Art Gallery of NSW, which were stored in the college basement.

Newling retired in 1947 and in 1955 was awarded an honorary Doctor of Letters by the University of New England.
