Born at 'Haroldston', Kelly's Plains, Alfred lived in the Armidale district almost all his life. He was a grazier with properties also in Queensland and Quirindi. He was an amateur student of mineralogy, having a renowned private collection of minerals. He erected a unique and curious monument at Dangarsleigh to those who fought in World War I and was involved in the establishment of AIF memorial avenues in Armidale. He was appointed honorary curator of the Armidale museum by the Armidale City Council in recognition of his assistance in its establishment. Alfred was a councillor on the Dumaresq Shire and a member of the Armidale Pastures Protection Board and was president of the Dangarsleigh Progress Association and Parents and Citizens Association for many years. He and his wife had three daughters and three sons, one of whom was killed in World War I. [Brief Biography compiled by Robin Hammond, January/February 2004] |
