As a young man Windeyer worked for the Board of Ordnance and by 1816 was Clerk of Works in the Royal Engineers Department of the ordnance depot at Purfleet. He retired after 30 years' service and travelled to Australia with his wife, Elizabeth, and eight children. They sailed on the James Pattison, arriving in Sydney in December 1838. He bought Kinross near Raymond Terrace and in 1840 established a home and grew grapes for wine. His sons were pioneer pastoralists and property owners, opening up land in places such as Deepwater in the New England, Wantabadgery in the Riverina and the Dawson River in Queensland. Windeyer was a 'God-fearing man of strong character' and several of his children married into well-known pastoral families. [Brief Biography compiled by Robin Hammond, January/February 2004] |
