Christian was born into a family with connections to Danish royalty. He was educated at universities in Copenhagen and Paris and graduated in medicine at Kiel University in 1848. He was appointed staff surgeon in the Schleswig-Holstein war and received the Iron Cross for his services. He came with his wife and four children to Australia on the Alster on 20 September 1853. In 1855 they were reputedly living at Walcha. In 1856 Christian applied for naturalisation, which he obtained on 25 February 1856. He was then living at Port Macquarie and was practising medicine. From 1857 to 1862 he acted as coroner for Port Macquarie and was physician for the local hospital. The Schraders had eight more children after their arrival in Australia. In 1864 they moved to Walcha. Between 1866 and 1875 Christian practised medicine in the Newcastle region. In 1890 Christian and his wife left Walcha and rented a house in Glebe while a house was built for them at Sans Souci. Here he lived for the remainder of his life.
