A Regional branch of the NSW Public School Teachers’ Federation was well established in the Wollongong district prior to 1930. By 1952 the branch was generally styled the Illawarra Teachers’ Association and represented teachers in the area from Stanwell Park to Lake Illawarra. Teachers at schools north of Woonona became members of the North Illawarra Teachers' Association when it was formed in the late 1950s. The Association has actively pursued improvements in the working conditions and salaries of teachers, and in the provision of education facilities in New South Wales.
