The Illawarra Regional Council for Social Development was incorporated as part of the Australian Assistance Plan in June 1975. This plan had been established as an experimental project in 1973 to introduce a new approach to welfare services tailored to regional requirements. Under the Plan, Regional Councils received capitation grants for the support of community welfare projects in their region. The administration of the Plan was vested in the Department of Social Security with the Social Welfare Commission exercising an overall evaluative role. The Illawarra Regional Council was dissolved on 24 August 1977. The Council had evolved from the Illawarra Community Welfare Committee (1972 - 1974) and the Interim Illawarra Regional Council for Social Development. |
