Born at Jarrara near Kiama on 22 February 1855, Frank McCaffrey had a life-long interest in dairying and the breeding of dairy cattle. From 1887 he held various positions with companies producing dairy products and during the early 1890s was manager of the Department of Agriculture's travelling dairy. The author of numerous journal and newspaper articles, he also wrote The First Century of Dairying in New South Wales (1909) and The History of Illawarra, its Pioneers, and its Dairy Cattle (1924). McCaffrey was particularly active in the promotion of the Australian Illawarra Shorthorn breed of dairy cattle and was patron of the Illawarra Dairy Cattle Association. |
