Bettington, James Brindley (1837 - 1915)

Born: 1 April 1837  Veteran Hall near Sydney, New South Wales.  Died: 22 December 1915  Oatlands, New South Wales.

Bettington was the eldest son of horse and sheep breeder James Brindley Bettington. He married his cousin, Caroline Sophia Hallen, on 30 July 1864 at Parramatta and built and lived at Brindley Park homestead, where he produced fine quality wool. He was resident magistrate at Merriwa and inaugurated 'penny readings' at the Merriwa School of Arts with the object of bringing community members together.

He was very active in public affairs such as agricultural associations and church and was survived by six of his 14 children.
