Mel Fackender was associated with a variety of social, political and environmental organisations in the Illawarra district. As a resident of Unanderra, he was associated with the Unanderra and District Progress Association from its establishment in 1934. His concern for the appreciation and protection of the natural environment was heightened by his interest in apiary and his membership of organisations such as the Illawarra Natural History Society. He was instrumental in the development of the Wirrimbirra sanctuary at Bargo. His membership of the Operative Painters’ Union and his sincere regard for humanity led to his membership of, and unqualified support for, the Australian Peace Council which sought to promote world peace by the cessation of hostilities in Korea and the banning of atomic weapons. He was a foundation member of the Illawarra Peace Committee and one of its delegates to peace conferences held in the 1950s. |
